Benefits of Membership

Publications

  • Publishes The Lichenologist six times yearly
  • Issues a Bulletin twice yearly

Meetings

  • Arranges annual residential meetings in spring, summer and autumn in all parts of the British Isles, and occasionally abroad, enabling members to become better acquainted with lichens in the field and giving the opportunity for beginners to learn from more experienced members.
  • Holds one day field meetings in various parts of the country.
  • Holds an Annual General Meeting, usually in London, in conjunction with an exhibition and lecture meeting.

Other Activities

  • A panel of referees assists members in the identification of specimens
  • Curates a herbarium from which members can borrow specimens
  • Maintains a library of books and reprints which are available for loan by post
  • Promotes the conservation of lichens and sites of lichenological importance through the Conservation Committee
  • Administers a mapping scheme to map the distribution of lichens in the British Isles

Subscriptions

Membership of the Society is open only to individuals. A Membership Application form is available for download here.

Institutions may subscribe to The Lichenlogist by application to Cambridge University Press or subscribe to the Society's Bulletin by email to the Assistant Treasurer.

Membership categories are as follows:

  • Ordinary Membership - Open to individuals only who have signed the application form and paid the subscriptions, having full entitlement to all publications and facilities of the Society.
  • Electronic Membership - As Ordinary membership except that The Lichenologist is electronic access only.
  • Life membership - Open to persons over 65 years of age.
  • Associate Membership (Annual Rates) - Each of the three categories of Associate membership enjoys full entitlement to all facilities of the Society as well as the Bulletin, but excluding The Lichenologist. The three categories are:
    1. Associate Member
    2. Senior Associate Member (over 65 years of age)
    3. Junior Associate Member (under 18 years or full-time students)
  • Family Membership - Open to persons of the same household as a member, having entitlement to all the facilities of the Society but receiving no publications and having no voting rights.

The subscription rates are as follows:

Subscriptions are due on joining and are for periods of calendar years. Back numbers of the current year's publications are sent to new members. Subsequent subscriptions are due in advance on the 1st January.

Methods of Payment

Sterling cheques, drawn on a U.K. bank, or a bank with a U.K. branch or agent, should be made payable to The British Lichen Society. Payment may also be made in Sterling cash, sent by registered post. Please send these payments to the Membership Secretary & Assistant Treasurer (Heidi Döring).

Payment in US dollars should be made to Dr. J W Hinds, who is the American Treasurer (Dr. J W Hinds).

Overseas members may also pay by direct transfer into the Society's UK bank accounts. However, please contact the Assistant Treasurer if you wish to pay in this way, and before you make any payment in order to obtain up to date account details (Heidi Döring). Please note that the full amount of the subscription should be sent to the society and that all commission charges must be paid by the sender.

EUROCHEQUES - The UK has withdrawn from the Eurocheque scheme. Payments should not be made by this method. In addition, please, do not send cash in Euros (or any other currency).

Renewals

If you are a current member and would like to renew your membership, you can do so by making arrangements to send the fee using any of the above methods of payment. There is no renewal form to be completed, however, make sure that your last name and your membership number are provided (e.g. as reference in a bank transfer or written on the back of a cheque).

For members who do not renew their subscriptions the mailing of journals will be suspended in the following year. If you don’t know whether you have already paid or need to renew, you can check here in this anonymous BLS membership list (you need to know your membership number in order to be able to use the list). Members with a bank account in the UK can ensure regular renewal by paying by standing order, a Standing Order Mandate form is available for download here.
