Introduction - Current names - Synonyms - Key - Habitat lists (either Current names or Synonyms) - Chemistry lists (either Current names or Synonyms) - Glossary
Especial acknowledgement must be made to Peter James. Without his breadth of knowledge, understanding, gentle encouragement, meticulous attention to detail and faith in its worthiness, this project could not have been acccomplished. Many hours were spent over the selection of photographs and his are the notes which accompany each one. Peter devised the habitat and chemistry tables and the analysis of the synonym genera.
A number of members have seen this publication in draft form and their constructive comments have been most welcome but I must thank Frank Dobson, in particular, for his patient and generous guidance, his encouragement and his willingness to share his wealth of experience in publishing.
My particular responsibility has been to draw together the many strands which make up this document. Much data had to be collected and converted into HTML, a universal language accessible to users of computers world-wide. The conversion of this data was largely undertaken by Laurence Tratt who wrote many complex programmes saving hundreds of hours of programming and ensuring consistency in presentation. The Society, and I in particular, are indebted to him.
Finally, I must thank Brian Fox, chairman of the Data Committee of the British Lichen Society, for overseeing the whole project with such good humour and determinatiom.
Photographs for this project were submitted by a number of members. Those not taken by me were provided by William Purvis, Peter James, Frank Dobson, Brian and Sandy Coppins and Ulrich Kirschbaum.
The whole document was prepared on an Acorn Risc PC computer.
