A slimmed-down version of the CD, for evaluation, is available via this [link]. Please note that the tables, the Glossary and the Synonym list are incomplete and that the only species to which there are live links is P. acetabulum.
This CD-Rom is an essential aid to the identification of the 47 species of British Isles Parmelia supplementing the maps and text of the first fascicle of The Lichen Atlas of the British Isles and may be ordered through the link to 'Publications' at the top of this page.
The CD-Rom is designed to be 'user-friendly'. A single mouse-click on a link, be it a section reference, the name of a Parmelia or a couplet number in the key, will take the user directly to the relevant point in the document.
The document (26Mb) is written in HTML, the language of the Internet, and is therefore accessible by users of computer of all types.
Requirements - access to a computer with the facility to read a CD-Rom and a web browser
Speed of access will depend on the specification of the computer and the browser. Browsers are being constantly 'improved'; updates are readily available on CDs with many computer magazines. The Society can supply a free browser, usable only on Acorn computers.
We regret that the B.L.S. cannot offer technical support and advice on suitability of your equipment. Please refer to your computer supplier.

Although the material is presented in machine-readable form on CD-Rom, it should be regarded as copyright material. Only the purchaser of the CD has the right to access it, on a single computer, unless authorization to do otherwise is granted by the British Lichen Society, in writing. You will not have the right to copy, reproduce or distribute it, other than as follows:
You will need a computer which can run a CD-Rom, and a browser. Different computer systems use different browsers to interpret the HTML code in which this CD is written. This program has been tested satisfactorily on Netscape (Mozilla) and Internet Explorer on both the the PC and Mac platforms.
Browsers are being constantly developed. Updates are readily available via the Internet or on CDs that come with many computer magazines. A browser, siutable for Acorn computers only, is available from the British Lichen Society.
The speed at which a program will run depends, not only on the browser, but also on computer hardware. You should seek advice from your computer agent, not from the BLS, if operating speeds seem slow or if you encounter other computer problems. If your computer has sufficient capacity you may wish to copy the 26 Mb CD onto the hard disc from which it may run faster.
Simply double-click on INDEX/HTM. Thereafter a single click on any blue word or number (if that is the 'link colour' which has been set on your browser) will take you straight there.
The first page of each species includes results of Pd, K, KC and C chemical spot tests and UV response as well as small images and a map (the 'thumbnails') giving a general indication of where each species is found. A single click on the images will produce a larger version with descriptive notes and a click on the map will reveal larger map enabling occurrence (or not) in a 10 km. square to be noted. From these subsequent pages you may return to the first page of each species, (which shows the image and map thumbnails), by single-clicking the species name. In the Key you may move forward or back by single-clicking the blue numbers.
